B Grade Hollywood Movie Clips! Since the technology became open to download free movies on the net, the Motion Picture Association might have you believe piracy could be the end around the globe. They claim to be scraping by, and I hear even Tom Cruise and Mr. Spielberg you live paycheck to paycheck, barely able to pay the rent. More reliable sources report that the President in the MPAA drives a Lexus along with a Mercedes, knowning that money in Hollywood is better than ever. Movie piracy does little to hurt the industry, also it may even make it. We can take a look at my own personal movie spendnig experiences, for example.
Increased Spending Habits
Back prior to the internet, I employed to buy about 1 movie monthly. I would also visit the theater once monthly. The rest I would just watch on TV or possibly a cable movie channel. Now, with the internet and pirated movies for download, I find I am buying about 7 DVD movies each month and going for the cinema two times as often. Why this change? Because I can watch more scenes and clips from movies online. I can download a motion picture and watch the better part from it. If it's good, I'll buy a real copy to see on my big TV. If it's bad, I junk it. Sure, they the studio didn't get my money to the bad movie I deleted, however they wouldn't have gotten it anyway. If we can easily sample more movies, we are able to get thinking about more movies.
Borrowing is the Same as Pirating?
Movie studios are partly to blame. Movie trailers generally don't display an affordable view in the movie. Trailers are vague, fast, and random. The trailers usually paint a different picture, and therefore are not a good synopsis from the movie. If we can easily download the movie itself and watch the first 20 minutes, we are able to see if it's really a keeper. I borrowed a duplicate of "Superbad" from a friend of mine and watched it. This is no different from piracy, inside the eyes of the MPAA. You're watching someone else's copy. I liked the movie a lot, I bought my very own DVD than it, and I've watched it 3 more times. The studio won out. If I hadn't borrowed that movie, I never could have bought it.
The same formula relates to downloads. If you download a film and adore it, then you're obviously thinking about buying the DVD to see it in higher quality on a big TV. No one really likes watching movies with a computer screen. Scene clips on Youtube or another movie upload sites may also be helpful.
MPAA's Faulty Formulas
So why don't you consider all these millions the MPAA claims to be losing, although most studio earnings are up? Well, they raid a server with pirated movies and shut it down. They count 2,400 downloads and multiply that times $29.95, the price with the DVD, and go on the news shouting "We just lost $72,000!" Sorry guys, your math is wrong. They assume all 2400 individuals who downloaded the movie might have bought the DVD. Most individuals who download movies are merely curious, and often download a lot more than they can watch. They skim several, and find yourself deleting most. It is more likely that this studio lost out on just several DVD sales. They may have even profited from those 2400 downloads, as a buzz might spread when the movie is a useful one.
The Buzz
When I owned a movie rental store, the studios used to give me 50 free passes to each and every new movie "preview showing" arriving at theaters. They wanted me to give these out free to ensure that a buzz might get going about the film. Pirated movies produce the same buzz. It helps studios. The more publicity, the better. This is why ticket sales and DVD sales are still up.
I've seen cases where a film is leaked just before it's release in theaters, and so the ticket sales are slow to the film. The studio will claim it's due for the pirated release, but it is usually because of a whole slew of bad reviews that can come from fans who watched the pirated movie. The lame ending is revealed in spoilers and reviews. This is the same effect because 2nd weekend of your film dropping off dramatically, once word spread of the company's stink factor.
I'd like to view the MPAA stop whining and initiate giving. Help share some of the people profits with charity. Or maybe reduce your exorbitant ticket prices and DVD prices. How about shaving several of that million dollar salary from the MPAA president? Or maybe just be better movies?
I don't think piracy is ever going to hurt the movie industry, but I do think the buzz toward remakes and sub-standard movies will affect a. Eventually, people might be more enthusiastic about the old classic movies as opposed to the mediocre formulas which might be filling the screens these days. The major Hollywood studios will lose more to competition from foreign films and independent films that they may from piracy.
